TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC/KNKT) is still investigating the incident involving a work train belonging to the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Rail (KCJB) project.

“Until now it is still in the process of investigative analysis. There’s nothing we can explain yet, If there is a release or update, we will immediately notify. Thank you,” said the Head of the Data, Information, and Public Relations Sub-Section of the NTSC Anggo Anugoro via a short message on Monday, January 16, 2023.

Previously, a train accident occurred on the Jakarta-Bandung fast train project railways, which was being developed by the PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China or KCIC on December 18, 2022. The incident resulted in the deaths of two Chinese foreign nationals and injured four others.

Corporate Secretary of PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), Rahadian Ratry, said that he could not yet explain the details of the cause of the accident. “The cause of the accident that occurred in December 2022 in the KCJB project currently remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Committee,” Rahdian told Tempo on Sunday evening, January 15, 2023.

The West Java Regional Police investigators have questioned 18 witnesses about the incident. The national police along with respective ministries and agencies have also examined the cause of the accident, including involving the NTSC and other experts.

Previously, Anggo said that the NTSC T investigation team was led by the Head of Sub-Committee (Kasubkom) for Rail Accident Investigation, Suprapto, accompanied by other investigators Gusnaedi Rachmanas, Hertriadi Ismawan, and Aditya WS Yudistira.

The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investments, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, has also responded regarding the incident. Luhut stated that the accident occurred due to human error. According to Luhut, the accident happened due to the decrease in speed when the train attempted to brake which caused it to derail. “It was a technical accident,” said Luhut when met at the Launching of the 2023-2024 Corruption Prevention Action in Jakarta, Tuesday, December 20, 2022.
